Latest Family Members

Their names are Rose, Rosetta, New Hampshire, Boston, and Butter.  I hope they all make it through Caroline's "cuddling" stage.  I do have to admit that they might not survive my "cuddling" stage either.  They are so stinking cute.  Caroline gave up her playhouse in the back yard for these little girls.  We gave her the choice of chickens in the playhouse/coup, or no chickens.  I think she'll have more fun with the birds.

I was in Tractor Supply a couple of days ago - they had baby chicks, ducks and rabbits in - they were so cute - especially the little rabbits! Do you have a heat lamp out there for the chicks?

I want to, but first of all there is still too much snow to set up a proper area for them, and second of all I already have animals coming out of my ears!!

Maybe one day...I'd also love to have a fine fat turkey strutting about, and a couple of cantankerous geese thrown in for good measure :)

Maureen suggested that it might be against the town's ordinance to have roosters, do you know if it is? I think it would be lovely to have one, I told Maureen I would name him Benedict, lol!

I don't know of any town ordinance against roosters, my neighbor Arne used to have them and if that dirtbag up near the top of mountain road can have guinnie hens then by all means get a dozen roosters!!

Here is a lady's blog that I read and she got a whole bunch of turkey's and birds she ordered by mistake...

When I first moved up here Dad caught a wild hair one day and when I came home from work there were bantam chickens and guinea hens running all over the place, much to my incredulity and amusement.

I grew to dislike the guinea hens tremendously ~ stanky, obnoxiously loud and annoyingly misguided birds that they were!

These little girls are under a heat lamp for a few more weeks, inside a 32 gallon tote with compressed pine pellets and chick starter feed and lots of water in my basement. They are getting accustomed to people peering in at them (they don't huddle together in a corner of the tote quivering)and Rose the Araucana (gold and brown)is very interested in checking us out. Butter, the Buff Cochin and Rose are the largest, about twice the size of the others, and they seem to be older as they are getting some of their wing feathers. They will be moved into a coop in about 6-8 weeks, but we'll see how long before they outgrow the tote.
