Yesterday was the beginning of the tree removal. I had left the house before the guys got here and returned to find almost all the trees gone. I didn't get a picture of the huge Norwegian Spruce that was to the left of the house. It was so big that of course that is what I first noticed and came pretty close to shock. I have been wrestling with the whole project all along, but finally OK'd it. It is hard to put the vertical world into perspective when we are on the ground; the big shocker for me was the vast openness, therefore increased vulnerability, as well as the poor little birds who were displaced and screaming at me. Anyway, I'm used to it now, and actually excited about having a clean slate to work from, and the gardens I planted will get plenty of sun, although probably more watering. We'll figure it out as we go.

And that is all you can do, figure it out as you go. It's your home now, and it's up to you to define it. If we always kept it the way it had been, there would be no progress...we make our mistakes along the way, and then we go from there. So I support you in carving out your own vision over on the East side..make it your own! Years down the road they will be talking about when you planted that magnificent garden, and you made your mark upon the land.
It looks weird but in a few weeks we will all forget what it looked like before the trees were cut. You need to get rid of old trees to make room for new ones. THanks for shopping today, I love all the stuff you guys got for me, stop over sometime and I'll show you
Besides looking weird I meant to say it looks good too.
Are you still sleeping??
You have such a great looking brown house there - it will be fun redefining the space around it. It is such a shock to the senses to see old growth that has made it thru the years cut down so quickly. But now someone will have firewood to keep themselves warm next winter and you can pick your trees and locate them so that they won't endanger your house.
This reminds me of what the previous owner of my little house here did before I bought the place. He had made arrangements with a tree service to cut down 3 pine trees that were dying and threatening the house. When he got home from work that night, he discovered that they had gotten their signals crossed and clear cut the yard, leaving only the trees and shrubs around the peripheral of the yard. Not only that, but they had bulldozed all the downed trees into a huge pile on one side of the yard!! The previous owner was furious but there was little he could do at that point. I was shocked also when I first came in for a "vacation" before I retired. But eventually, I realized it was probably a good thing. With all the droughts and forest fire risks here, it would make it a lot easier to defend/save the house in a fire ....
Thanks for dinner, that was really nice (loved them croutons yum!!) and thanks for keeping me company today, I was so happy that Caroline seemed to enjoy herself so much. I'm all tuckered out, so I'll post some pics on mine tomorrow...you'll have to carry the wand tonight!
Thanks for coming over today, it was nice to see you and Caroline finally talks to me!!! and Ray even, guess food is the key to her heart.
I think you house looks nice without being hidden by all the trees and I bet you get a lot more light in there, that happened here when we cut down this big green overpowering tree, even the basement got lighter.
